Juvenile Cataracts Surgery Is Needed
Goliath has had a very rough start in his short life. He is only 8 weeks old. We rescued him from a shelter. His foster parents rescued him along with his three other siblings.
They were settling in when his foster parents noticed that something wasn’t right about Goliath. He was constantly whining, wandering around aimlessly and running into bowls, walls and doors.
He was taken to our vet and it was found that he has Juvenile Cataracts. The vet said that he can only see some light. Goliath has been very frightened by the new home and new surroundings because he went from feeling safe where he was at to a whole new environment. His other siblings were picking on him and being unable to see he couldn’t fight back. So with help from his foster parents he was placed in a smaller enclosure by himself and is becoming acclimated and is feeling more secure. He gets to visit with his other siblings for a little while but if they start playing too hard, they get separated. Poor little guy. How frightened he must be, from being able to see his surroundings and siblings to only being able to see a little light.
While otherwise healthy, he cannot see. He has to see an Opthamologist. He will need Cataract surgery. We are hopeful that he will regain his sight with the surgery. His foster parents have to put some weight on him though. He is way too small to survive surgery. He only weighs 3 pounds.
You can see the cataract if you look closely at the pictures. It is the white milky center part of his eyes that are the cataracts.
If you would please find it in your heart to make a donation to help us with the cost of his surgery it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount whether large or small helps. Just click on any of the donation buttons within this story to go to our secure PayPal account.
We will continue to have updates on his progress.
Thank You from the bottom of little Goliath’s paws for any donation you can make.
UPDATE
SUPRISING RESULTS, SURGERY SCHEDULED
Goliath has been to see the Veterinary Opthamologist. He weighed in at 4.5 pounds. He had drops put in his eyes to numb them and then drops to dialate them. Upon examination of Goliath's eyes, there was a note of suprise coming from the doctor. After finishing up his examination of Goliath he went on to explain his findings to us. He indicated that indeed Goliath does have a cataract in his left eye. He is almost completely blind and without surgery will lose all vision in that eye.
Then he began to describe his right eye. The vet indicated that he wanted to see if he could get a picture of his right eye. They took him away and soon brought him back in, indicating that Goliath wouldn't hold still to get a picture of his right eye. So here we are thinking that something is really wrong with his right eye. The vet went on to explain that in his 20 + years of veterinary medicine he has seen nothing like Goliath's right eye. We were then told that Goliath has TWO, yes that was TWO Optic Nerves in his right eye. The vet said that it is rare among humans but he has never heard of nor seen anything like it in a dog. We were told that while he may have two optic nerves, his eye sees normally. They said that his body uses one while the other one is just there going who knows where. The vet even ordered a new camera that day so he can observe and take pictures of this rare event found in our little Goliath.
Goliath is scheduled for surgery in about 3 months. He cannot go through surgery yet as he still needs to grow and mature a bit.
He can now go through surgery in about 3 months and become a great dog. We care for them no matter what happens or what is found. Without the support of the general public we could not have saved Goliath from death nor could we have gone ahead with the surgery. It will put a strain on our group but we will have him whole and healthy no matter the cost. Please find it in your heart to donate.
